Barely three months in use and your once crystal-clear case has a yellowish tint, especially around the edges and camera. When a clear case turns yellow, it is not dirt you can wipe away, it is usually a chemical reaction inside the material itself. Here you will learn why it happens, which home remedies actually work, and which material keeps your case clear for good.
Why clear cases turn yellow in the first place
The vast majority of clear cases are made of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) or soft silicone. Both are flexible and cheap, but they react to three things:
- UV light: Sunlight breaks molecular chains in the TPU. This creates so-called chromophores that reflect light with a yellow tint. This is the main cause and cannot be reversed.
- Heat: In your pocket, during wireless charging, or on the car dashboard, heat further accelerates oxidation.
- Skin oils and sweat: Oils and acids from your hands soak into the soft material and discolour the grip areas first.
In short: cheap TPU yellows almost inevitably, it is a matter of when, not if. The good news is that modern coatings and hybrid materials delay this significantly or prevent it entirely.
Cleaning tricks: what helps and what harms
You cannot chemically restore an already yellowed TPU case to crystal clear, but surface discolouration from oil and grime can be reduced. These home remedies make sense:
- Warm soapy water: A few drops of dish soap, a soft toothbrush, gentle scrubbing, dry well. Removes skin oils and light haze.
- Baking soda paste: Mix baking soda with a little water into a paste, let it sit, rinse off. Mildly brightens surface stains.
- Isopropyl alcohol (70%): Apply to a cloth and wipe the edges. Removes greasy build-up, but use it only spot by spot.
Stay away from these methods:
- Chlorine bleach: Attacks the TPU, makes it brittle and often milky rather than clear. The damage outweighs the benefit.
- Aggressive solvents like acetone: Break down the surface and leave matte, sticky spots.
- Hot water over 60 degrees: Deforms soft TPU and speeds up yellowing.
Realistically, cleaning is only a stopgap. Deep UV yellowing sits in the material and will not come out.

If you really want to get rid of yellowing, the material decides. Here are the common options side by side:

When to simply replace the case
Sometimes the effort is no longer worth it. Replace your case when:
- the yellowing is patchy and uneven (deep material damage),
- the TPU becomes sticky, brittle, or cracked,
- the edges stretch out and the phone no longer sits tight.
