Few topics create as many half-truths as the question of whether fast charging harms your battery. The short answer: a modern smartphone manages voltage and temperature on its own, so quality fast charging is perfectly safe. The real enemies of your battery are heat and constant full charging, not the wattage itself.
How a lithium battery actually ages
Your phone battery is a lithium-ion cell. It ages through charge cycles: one cycle equals using up 100 percent of capacity, whether in one go or spread over several days. After roughly 500 to 1000 full cycles, capacity drops to around 80 percent. That is normal wear and happens regardless of whether you charge slowly or fast.
What really accelerates ageing are two things: high temperatures and long periods spent at very high or very low charge. This is exactly where modern technology steps in.
Why fast charging is safe today
Current devices do not charge at full power the whole time. High watt figures (e.g. 20 W, 45 W or more) only apply in the lower range, usually up to about 50 percent. After that the phone throttles the power significantly to protect the cell. A smart chip continuously monitors the temperature.
The standard matters: USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) and device-side protocols negotiate voltage and current safely. A certified charger never delivers more than your device requests. That is why a strong 45 W charger on a phone that only draws 20 W is completely harmless, it simply charges at 20 W.
The real risk factor: cheap no-name chargers
The biggest problem is not fast chargers but bad ones. Cheap no-name adapters without protection circuits can cause overvoltage, unstable currents and strong heat, in the worst case leading to failure or fire. So look for certified chargers: MFi (for Apple Lightning), USB-PD compliant and with CE marking.
- Certified: USB-PD, MFi, reputable brand, protection against overvoltage and overheating.
- Risky: no-name from a bargain bin, no test mark, suspiciously cheap, no datasheet.
Good chargers and matching cables from Swiss stock cost a few francs more but protect your entire device.
The 20 to 80 percent sweet spot
If you want to maximise lifespan, keep the charge level between 20 and 80 percent as much as possible. In this window the chemical stress is lowest. Constantly holding at 100 percent or regularly running fully empty stresses the cell more.
Use optimised charging
Both iPhone and Android have features for this. On iPhone it is called Optimised Battery Charging (or an 80 percent charge limit on newer models), on many Android devices adaptive or protected charging. The phone learns your rhythm and deliberately holds back the charge until you need the device.
Charging overnight, yes or no?
Charging overnight is unproblematic today. Once 100 percent is reached, the charging electronics stop and the device only draws minimal power to hold the level. With optimised charging it even stays deliberately at 80 percent and tops up just before you wake. The old advice to unplug immediately dates from the era of old battery technology.
