The plug is standardised, the capabilities behind it are not. Two USB-C cables can look identical and still do completely different jobs: one charges your laptop at 240 watts but carries no video at all. The other drives a 4K monitor but delivers only 60 watts. If you do not know this, you buy twice.

Three things travel through the same cable — or do not

A USB-C cable can handle three tasks, and every one of them is optional:

  • Power — from 60 through 100 up to 240 watts. That is the number printed largest on the box.
  • Data — from a sluggish 480 Mbit/s (USB 2.0) up to 40 Gbit/s (Thunderbolt, USB 4).
  • Video — only if the cable supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode.

Here is the trap: a charge-only cable may carry full power and still have just two data wires inside. Enough for electricity, not enough for a display signal. That is why the monitor stays black even though the cable promises 240 W.

How to spot it before buying

The product title almost always names both capabilities when both are present. If there is no data figure, it is a charging cable — even where nobody says so explicitly.

Where it actually shows up

On a phone you rarely notice — photos sync over USB 2.0 too, it just takes longer. It becomes obvious in three places: an external monitor on a hub, moving large video files, and docking stations that push picture and power down the same cable.

Manufacturers who specialise in connectivity tend to state the data rate consistently. At UGREEN, for instance, the series appears in the title — charging cables and Thunderbolt cables are kept clearly apart. On no-name cables the figure is often missing entirely, and then the rule is simple: it is a charging cable.

Length and plug shape

One metre is enough at a desk or in the car. You need two metres when the socket sits behind the sofa. Angled plugs pay off at the bedside and in a car mount: the plug does not stick out and does not bend when the phone sits in the holder — the most common reason a cable goes wobbly after a few months.

Data works the other way round: the longer the cable, the harder high speeds become. Passive Thunderbolt cables usually manage the full 40 Gbit/s only up to about 80 centimetres. More length means paying noticeably more for an active cable.

If you only buy one

A one-metre USB 4 or Thunderbolt cable does everything: full charging power, fast data, and it drives a monitor. It costs more than a plain charging cable — but you never again have to work out which cable in the drawer is the right one.

For the socket by your bed or the charger in the car, a simple charging cable is plenty. No data ever travels there, and paying extra for bandwidth nobody uses is money gone.
