Autumn holidays with kids: the phone charging and protection checklist

Contents5
For an autumn holiday with children, pack charging accessories for your actual devices and simultaneous needs. Test the entire combination at home, including the smartwatch charger. Cable counts or total watts alone cannot prove every device will charge appropriately.
A device card before packing
| Device | Record | Pack |
|---|---|---|
| Phones | Exact model; USB-C or Lightning | Matching cable and compatible adapter |
| Tablet or console | Maker’s charging requirements | Cable and suitable power profile |
| Headphones and older devices | Check actual connector | Matching cable, not automatically Micro-USB |
| Smartwatch | Exact watch model | Compatible smartwatch charger, cable and required adapter |
Two USB-C devices charging together need two suitable cables. One may serve sequential charging. An organiser and markings reduce mix-ups; a suitable spare remains useful.
Test a multiport adapter together
With multiport adapters, check output for the actual occupied-port combination and supported profiles. Total output is insufficient. Multiple devices need not always slow down, but overnight completion is not guaranteed. Test all devices and USB-C cables together before travelling. Check tablet or console wattage by exact model.
Check destination sockets and input-voltage support. A travel adapter changes the plug rather than replacing a required voltage converter. Swiss plugs abroad helps.
Power banks and flight rules
Choose a USB-C power bank by weight, input and output. mAh alone establishes neither fixed phone recharges nor weight. Record printed watt-hours; converting mAh needs the corresponding cell voltage.
Following the 27 March 2026 change, IATA specifies at most two power banks per person, in cabin baggage and individually protected against short circuits. They must not be recharged in flight. IATA also recommends not using them to charge other devices onboard. Check airline rules for capacity, storage and use; 100 Wh is not universal permission. Power banks on planes explains further.
Protection without false certainty
Check screen protection and cases for cracks, lifted edges and fit. They cannot prevent every accident. Long neck or crossbody loops can catch during play or climbing. The Swiss BFU warns against neck lanyards on playgrounds; store children’s phones without such loops there. A protective bag only helps within maker specifications and with its closure correctly sealed. Do not charge wet devices or accessories.
The evening before
- Download needed maps, films and audio, then open them offline.
- Check roaming terms for your plan and destination.
- Check backups, finding devices and age-appropriate account settings.
- Charge before travel and remove damaged batteries from the packing plan.
- Place smartwatch charger, cables, adapter and any travel adapter in the organiser.
Pack by routine rather than a fixed gadget count. Cabin-bag travel accessories offers additional ideas.
