Why Your Phone Loses Charge in the Car Despite the Cable

The situation is familiar: an hour of driving with navigation, the phone on the charger, and on arrival it has less battery than at the start. The phone is not faulty. In this situation it simply draws more power than the charger supplies.
What navigation really consumes
Three things run flat out at the same time: the screen at full brightness, because otherwise nothing is legible; GPS and mobile data continuously; and the map rendering, which keeps the graphics chip busy. Together that quickly reaches 6 to 8 watts. Add summer heat and the phone throttles charging on top of that to protect the battery.
An old 5-watt charger delivers less than is being consumed. The difference comes out of the battery — the charge level falls even though the cable is plugged in.
How much power is enough

For a single phone running navigation, 20 to 30 watts is the sensible point. More does no harm but gains little — the phone only takes what it accepts anyway.
The second suspect: the cable
A strong charger is no use if the cable does not carry the power. Old USB-A cables from the drawer are often limited to a few watts. Full output needs a USB-C cable rated for it.
In a car an angled plug pays off as well. With the phone in a mount, a straight plug sticks out downwards and gets bent with every bump — the most common reason car charging cables go wobbly after six months.
Two ports share the output
On multi-port chargers the wattage is the total, not per port. A 45-watt adapter with two ports delivers 45 watts to one device, and often 25 plus 20 with two. If you regularly travel as a pair and want to charge both, do the maths beforehand. Manufacturers such as UGREEN and Anker usually state the split.
Wireless in the mount
Magnetic mounts with inductive charging are convenient but typically deliver 7.5 to 15 watts and generate waste heat doing so — in summer behind a windscreen, exactly what makes the phone throttle further. For long navigation, a cable is more reliable. For short trips and music, wireless is the nicer solution.
And if it is still not enough
If the battery stalls even at 30 watts, the obvious things help: turn screen brightness down a notch, move the phone out of direct sun, take the case off in strong heat. A phone trapped in insulating heat barely charges at all, no matter how strong the charger is.
