Two cases, same phone: one weighs 18 grams and barely adds bulk, the other 85 grams and turns the phone into a brick. Both are sold as protection. What they actually deliver differs sharply, and not in proportion to thickness.

What actually absorbs a fall

On impact, the job is to shed kinetic energy over a longer distance. That is what material able to deform does. A hard shell passes the blow on almost unchanged; a soft one on its own deforms too far. Which is why good cases combine a soft frame with a firm back.

Two details matter more than overall thickness. The lip above the display should stand one to one and a half millimetres proud, so the screen never touches the ground in a face-down fall. And the corners should be thicker than the sides, because phones almost never land flat.

What MIL-STD-810G actually tells you

The label appears on many rugged cases. Behind it is a US military test procedure in which a device is dropped 26 times from 1.22 metres onto plywood over concrete. It is a sensible test, but not a certification: manufacturers test themselves and define the setup themselves. As a sign that somebody tested at all, it is useful. As a guarantee, it is not.

Grip beats thickness

The best protection is the fall that never happens. A mirror-smooth ultra-slim shell slides out of your hand and off the sofa far more readily than one with a textured surface. If you take a lot of calls on the move, a grippy case buys you more than two extra millimetres of armour.

In practice, the large majority does best with a hybrid of soft frame and firm back. Ultra-slim pays off for people who want to see their device's design and use a tempered glass. Genuinely rugged models are meant for building sites, mountain trips and children's hands, which outdoor cases covers in detail. Among our cases, Raptic covers the rugged end and DUX and X-Level the slim one.

Frequently asked questions

Hardly. It prevents scratches and small knocks. For a fall from hip height it lacks the travel over which energy could be dissipated.
The manufacturer applied a US military drop procedure, usually 26 drops from 1.22 metres. Testing is self-conducted, not an independent certification.
One to one and a half millimetres. That keeps the screen off the ground when the phone lands face down.
From around three millimetres it slows down, from five it often becomes unreliable. Outdoor cases with metal parts can block it entirely.
Not necessarily. Construction and grip count for more than weight. A well-built 35-gram case protects better than a slippery 70-gram shell.
