The appeal is obvious: stick the power bank on the back of your phone, it holds, and you keep talking while it charges. No cable snagging in your bag. That convenience has a measurable price, and almost no box mentions it.

How strong the magnet really is

The hold comes from a magnet ring, introduced by Apple as MagSafe and now adopted for everyone by the Qi2 standard. What decides the grip is not the power bank alone, but whatever sits in between. A slim hard case with a built-in ring barely matters. A soft silicone case without one swallows almost all of the hold: past roughly two millimetres of material, the bank slowly slides down while you walk.

Wireless charging costs about a third

Induction moves energy through a magnetic field, and part of it becomes heat instead of battery charge. In practice, 5000 mAh of cell capacity delivers roughly 3000 to 3300 mAh into the phone. That is one full charge for an iPhone 16 or a Galaxy S25, not one and a half. Expect that, and you will not be disappointed.

That is why nearly every good model also has a USB-C port. Magnetic while you are moving, cable on the train or at the table in the evening: use both sides.

5000 or 10,000 mAh

A magnetic power bank carries its weight exactly where you hold the phone. A 5000 mAh unit usually weighs 110 to 130 grams and stays unobtrusive. A 10,000 mAh one reaches 200 to 250 grams and bulges in your pocket, but charges twice. For a working day the small one is nearly always enough. For a weekend or a festival the larger capacity pays off, though then a classic cable power bank makes more sense.

The five points that make the difference

  • Qi2 or 15 watts instead of the older 7.5 watts. It noticeably halves charging time.
  • A USB-C port that also works as an output, not only for refilling the bank itself.
  • A percentage display rather than four LED dots. You can see whether taking it along is still worth it.
  • A fold-out stand if you watch videos on the train. It costs almost no weight.
  • A matching case with a magnet ring, otherwise the best battery is useless.
