MagSafe, Qi and Qi2 explained in brief
MagSafe is Apple's magnetic charging system, built into every iPhone since the iPhone 12. A magnet ring in the back centres the phone precisely on the charging coil and holds accessories such as wallets, stands or mounts securely in place. Charging is wireless at up to 15 watts, with newer iPhones reaching up to 25 watts.
Qi is the classic open standard for wireless charging – without magnets. You have to position the phone correctly on the pad by hand; if it sits off-centre, it charges slowly or not at all.
Qi2 is the successor: the Wireless Power Consortium adopted Apple's magnet technology into the open standard. Qi2 therefore offers magnetic alignment like MagSafe plus 15 watts of charging power – for all manufacturers. Since 2026 there is also Qi2 25W (also called Qi2.2) with up to 25 watts. Best of all: everything remains backward compatible. A Qi2 charger also charges older Qi phones, simply at their maximum speed.

As of 2026: which Android phones support Qi2?
With Google it's straightforward: the Pixel 10 series is the first major Android line-up with magnets built directly into the body – Google calls it "Pixelsnap". Any MagSafe accessory snaps straight onto the phone without a case. The Pixel 10 and 10 Pro charge wirelessly at 15 watts, and the Pixel 10 Pro XL even supports Qi2 25W.
With Samsung it's more complicated – and this is exactly where it pays to know the details: the Galaxy S25 and S26 are only "Qi2 Ready". Their charging tech meets the Qi2 standard (the S26 Ultra charges at up to 25 watts), but the magnets are missing from the body – Samsung wanted to keep the devices as slim as possible. Without magnets, your Galaxy slides around on any magnetic charger and no mount will hold it. Only a magnetic case with an integrated ring makes your Galaxy fully Qi2-capable. Here the case isn't a nice-to-have extra – it's the key to the entire magnetic ecosystem.
The solution for any Android with wireless charging
Your phone doesn't appear on any Qi2 list? No problem. As long as it charges wirelessly, one of two routes will make it magnetic:

How to position the magnet ring correctly
- Clean the back of your phone or case with a little rubbing alcohol and let it dry.
- Use the template that usually comes in the box: it aligns with the edges of the phone and shows you the exact ring position.
- No template? The ring belongs centred over the charging coil. On most phones it sits in the middle of the back. Place the phone on a charging pad as a test and shift it slightly until it charges reliably – that's exactly where the ring goes.
- Peel off the protective film, place the ring and press firmly for 20–30 seconds.
- Ideally let the adhesive cure for a few hours before attaching heavier accessories such as power banks.
What to watch out for
- Case thickness of about 3 mm maximum: the thicker the case, the weaker the magnetic hold and charging power. Very thick outdoor cases often don't work at all.
- No metal or cards in between: metal plates block charging completely, and credit or badge cards can be damaged by the magnet and heat.
- Realistic charging power: without Qi2 certification, your Android typically charges at 7.5 to 15 watts via the magnet ring – convenient for the desk and nightstand, but no substitute for fast charging by cable.
- Ring quality matters: a strong ring keeps your phone secure in a car mount even on Swiss cobblestones.
