Which AirPods do I have?

Identify your AirPods generation – via Bluetooth settings, the model number, or by case and shape. Key for the right cover.

Fastest: in the Bluetooth settings

  • iPhone › SettingsBluetooth next to your AirPods.
  • You'll find the model name and model number.
  • If connected, they also appear right at the top of Settings.

Identify by model number

The model number (format A1xxx–A3xxx) is printed in small type on the stem of each AirPod and on the inside of the case lid. It maps the generation uniquely.

Identify by case & shape

The generations differ mainly by case and stems. Here's how to narrow them down:

Stem length

Long stems = 1st or 2nd gen. Short stems = 3rd/4th gen and Pro. AirPods Max have none – they're over-ear.

Silicone tips

Only the AirPods Pro have replaceable silicone ear tips. All other generations sit in the ear without tips.

Case shape

Tall and narrow = 1st/2nd gen. Wide, landscape = 3rd/4th gen and Pro. The Pro case also has a speaker opening on the bottom.

Charging port

Lightning = older generations. USB-C = AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C), 4th gen and newer. Many cases also charge wirelessly.
Tip: The generation determines the right cover – a case for the 1st/2nd gen won't fit the 3rd gen or Pro. When unsure, check the model number inside the case lid.
