A phone falls to the floor; a watch does not. It grazes door frames, shelf edges and, during strength training, the barbell. Scratches therefore happen differently, sideways and shallow, and that changes the answer to what protection makes sense.

First check which glass you have

On the Apple Watch, the case material determines the glass. Aluminium models use Ion-X glass, which handles impact well but scratches visibly. Stainless steel and titanium models, as well as the Ultra, carry sapphire. Sapphire barely scratches, but is more likely to crack under a hard blow.

An Ultra therefore usually needs no protection at all: sapphire and the slightly raised case rim already handle it. On an aluminium Watch, protection nearly always pays off.

Film, glass or bumper

The decisive point on watches is the curve. Apple Watch displays from Series 7 onwards taper off in a rounded edge. A flat-cut tempered glass sticks only in the middle there and leaves exactly the edge where scratches happen exposed. A flexible film lays itself over the curve; a bumper with integrated glass also grips the case rim.

What bumpers change day to day

A bumper protects the most and interferes the most. It puts a frame around the case, so gestures that start at the display edge take some practice. During sport, sweat also collects under the frame, so it should come off and rinse clean.

If you wear the watch mainly at the office and on a bike, a film serves you better. If you take it into strength or climbing training, the bumper will keep you happier.

On a Galaxy Watch, mind the bezel

Models with a rotating bezel do not tolerate protection that stands proud of the glass: the ring then turns only with difficulty. Here the rule is exactly cut, not as large as possible. Watch glasses and films are in screen and camera protection, and strap sizes are covered in finding your Apple Watch strap size.

Frequently asked questions

Usually not. Sapphire barely scratches, and the raised case rim already protects the edge.
Because the display curves towards the sides and a flat glass cannot follow it. A flexible film or a bumper with glass fits better.
Gestures starting at the display edge take some getting used to. In return the case edges and the glass are protected all round.
On curved watch displays the film, because it adheres right to the edge. On flat displays glass feels nicer to swipe on.
The watch stays as water resistant as before, but water and salt collect under the frame. Take it off and rinse after swimming.
