Finding the right Apple Watch band size is easier than most people think, because what matters is not the model year of your watch but the width of the case. Apple sorts every band into exactly two size groups, and within a group they are freely interchangeable. In this guide we show you which cases belong together, how to measure the right length and what to watch out for with Solo Loop and Ultra.

It is the case width that counts, not the series

A common mistake is to assume a band must match the exact series (like “Series 9 only”). In reality, the fit depends on the case width in millimetres. A 41 mm band therefore fits a 38, 40 and 42 mm watch too, because they all belong to the same group. Across every generation there are only two lug widths, and the slide mechanism is identical within a group.

Which band fits which case?

Remember two families: the smaller group (38/40/41/42 mm) and the larger group (44/45/46/49 mm plus the old 42 mm of the first series). One special case is the number 42 mm, which exists in both groups, more on that below.

Case sizeExamplesBand group
38 / 40 / 41 / 42 mm (new)SE, Series 4–10Small (S)
42 mm (old)Series 0–3Large (L)
44 / 45 / 46 mmSE, Series 4–10Large (L)
49 mmUltra, Ultra 2Large (L)

In short: if you buy a band for a 45 mm watch, it also fits 44, 46 and 49 mm. A 40 mm band fits 38, 41 and the new 42 mm watch. Just watch out for an old 42 mm Series 3, which belongs to the large group.

The right length: S/M/L and your wrist

Besides the group you need the right length. Many bands like the Sport Band ship with two closure parts for different circumferences. Here is how to measure correctly:

  • Wrap a tape measure or a strip of paper loosely around your wrist where the watch sits.
  • Note the circumference in millimetres (typically 130–200 mm).
  • Then choose S/M (smaller wrists) or M/L (larger wrists).

With classic bands that use a buckle or folding clasp, the length is uncritical because you have several holes or positions. You only need to check carefully with loops that have no closure.

Solo Loop: this one must fit exactly

The Solo Loop and the Braided Solo Loop have no closure, no buckle and no clip. The band is a single stretchable ring and must therefore fit your wrist exactly. Too big and the watch slides; too small and it pinches. Be sure to use the official sizing template (print it at original size and wrap it around your wrist) or measure your circumference precisely and match it against the size chart. When in doubt, check the value that falls between two sizes rather than ordering on a guess.

Materials at a glance

With the size sorted, style is next. These materials are the most popular:

  • Sport Band (silicone): tough, water-resistant, ideal for sport and everyday wear.
  • Braided Solo Loop: woven fabric, elastic, very comfortable, no closure.
  • Leather: refined and office-friendly, but not for the shower or heavy sweat.
  • Milanese (stainless steel mesh): fine magnetic mesh, infinitely adjustable, elegant.
  • Nylon / Sport Loop: light, breathable, quick to fit with hook-and-loop.

Ultra bands and compatibility

The Apple Watch Ultra (49 mm) belongs to the large group. Regular 44/45/46 mm bands therefore fit the Ultra too. The other way round, rugged Ultra bands like the Trail Loop, Alpine Loop or Ocean Band are also compatible with 44/45/46 mm, though they look a little bulky on smaller cases. For outdoor and water sports you will find matching gear in our Lifestyle & Outdoor section, and the full range of watch accessories is in the Apple Watch shop. All bands ship from a Swiss warehouse, with free delivery over CHF 15 and a 2-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. 38, 40, 41 and the new 42 mm watch share the same group, so the bands are interchangeable between them.
On your iPhone open the Watch app under General and About, or check the back of the watch. The size in mm is listed there.
Yes, the Ultra (49 mm) shares the group with 44, 45 and 46 mm. Ultra bands fit these sizes too, but look chunkier.
Measure your wrist circumference precisely in mm and match it to the size chart. The Solo Loop has no closure and must fit exactly.
The 42 mm of Series 0–3 belongs to the large group (44/45/46/49 mm). The new 42 mm Series 10 belongs to the small group instead.
