A phone can warm up during charging without being faulty. Warmth alone does not establish safety either. Stop charging for strongly uncomfortable heat, a temperature warning or visible damage and investigate. An automatic charging pause can be a protective function.

Which temperature range applies?

Apple recommends charging iPhone at an ambient temperature of 0 to 35 °C. This means surrounding air rather than an allowable housing or battery temperature. We assign no invented surface limits to slightly warm, warm or hot. Touch cannot replace warnings or damage checks.

Separate heat sources

Energy transfer involves losses. Games, navigation and video add phone-generated heat; sunshine and a hot car add heat externally. Loss proportions differ between setups. Adapter wattage or case material cannot reliably predict temperature.

Mild warmth without other signs

Observe ventilation, accessory condition and changes

Slow or paused charging

Read the message, stop active use, check surroundings

Strongly uncomfortable heat or warning

Disconnect and allow natural cooling

Swelling, burning smell, smoke or melting

Stop use; professional assistance needed

Compare only after cooling

  1. Disconnect. Let the phone cool in a cooler ventilated place, without fridge, water or direct cold airflow.
  2. Use a firm clear surface. Avoid pillows and blankets; even a bedside table guarantees no temperature.
  3. For an undamaged device, turn the screen off and stop games or navigation. Remove an interfering case and use an intact compatible setup.
  4. Change cable or adapter individually at similar battery levels. Improvement is a clue rather than proof of a specific fault.

Suitable USB-C adapters and USB-C cables must match the device. More power cannot bypass thermal limits. With wireless chargers, check alignment and exact compatibility; remove cards or metal accessories. Magnetic alignment does not prevent all warming.

A pause at 80 percent?

Apple says heat may limit charging above 80 percent. A charge limit or optimised charging can also cause a pause. Read the battery message instead of diagnosing by percentage alone. Fast charging and battery care explains the connection.

When to seek service

Repeated strong heat while idle with suitable cables and chargers needs maker or service assessment. Do not use damaged parts for further tests. Treat visible dirt only as explained in Cleaning your phone. Do not press or open swollen devices; Handling swollen batteries explains the next assessment. For smoke or fire, keep away and alert the fire service.

Frequently asked questions

No. Apple’s 0 to 35 °C range concerns ambient air during charging. It does not establish a universal safe surface temperature.
No. It can address a power bottleneck but cannot bypass a thermal pause. Check surroundings, use and accessories first.
No. Several causes are possible. Repeated strong heat, swelling or warnings need assessment; touch alone is no diagnosis.
