The iPhone 17 is here, and with it the classic question: does my old case from the iPhone 16 or 15 still fit? The short answer is almost always no. An iPhone 17 case is model-specific, because with every generation Apple moves the camera module, repositions buttons and slightly adjusts the body dimensions. Here is what changed and which accessories you really need to buy new.

Why an old case no longer fits the iPhone 17

Even if your old iPhone looks the same size at first glance, the crucial cut-outs sit elsewhere. A case is manufactured to the millimetre for each model. Just one or two millimetres of offset means the camera gets covered or a button is no longer reachable.

  • Camera module: On the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, the camera unit moves to a wide bar across the whole back instead of the square block of previous models.
  • Camera Control button: Since the iPhone 16 Pro there is the touch-sensitive camera button on the right side. Old cases without that cut-out block it completely.
  • Body dimensions: The ultra-slim iPhone Air has a completely unique format that is not compatible with any earlier case.

What changed across the iPhone 17 line-up

The model range got broader in 2025. Alongside the iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, there is now the ultra-thin iPhone Air, which takes the place of the former Plus. Every model has its own dimensions and its own camera layout, so there is no universal case across the range.

If you force the old case on anyway, you risk this:

  • The camera flash reflects off the case edge and your photos turn milky.
  • The Camera Control button and the Action button cannot be pressed.
  • The case does not sit flush and falls off at every bump, leaving your expensive device unprotected.

What you can keep from your old iPhone

You do not have to buy everything new. Chargers and cables with USB-C keep working, and MagSafe also stays compatible, since Apple has built in the magnet ring since the iPhone 12. Cases and tempered glass, however, are always model-bound.

AccessoryCarries over from old iPhone?Why
Charger / power adapterYesUSB-C standard, independent of the model
USB-C cableYesSame port since iPhone 15
MagSafe chargerYesMagnet ring positioned the same since iPhone 12
Protective caseNoCamera, buttons and dimensions are model-specific
Tempered glassNoDisplay size and curves differ
Phone chainPartlyOnly with a matching new case that has chain loops

What you need new for your iPhone 17

For optimal protection from day one we recommend three things. A precise-fit protective case for your exact model, a tempered glass with camera protection, since the display size changed slightly too, and optionally a MagSafe charger if you do not have one yet. When buying, always check the exact model name, so 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max or Air.

How to find the right accessory

  • Always pick your exact model, never a similar one.
  • With cases that have chain loops you can keep using your phone chain.
  • At rpd.ch we ship from Swiss stock via A-Post, free shipping from CHF 15 and 2 years of warranty.

In short: cables and MagSafe stay, case and tempered glass need to be new. That way you protect your iPhone 17 properly right from the start.

Frequently asked questions

No. The camera module, the Camera Control button and the body dimensions changed, so the cut-outs of an old case no longer line up. You need a model-specific case for the iPhone 17.
Yes. Apple has placed the MagSafe magnet ring in the same spot since the iPhone 12, so your MagSafe charger charges the iPhone 17 without issues.
No. The display size and edge radii of the iPhone 17 line differ, so an old glass will not cover cleanly. Get a matching tempered glass with camera protection.
No. The iPhone Air is much slimmer and has its own format. It needs a dedicated Air case, not a 17 or Pro case.
No. USB-C cables and adapters keep working across models since the iPhone 15. Only the case and tempered glass are model-bound.
Partly. The chain itself still works, but it needs a new iPhone 17 case with matching chain loops.
