The Apple Pencil 2. Gen works with iPad Pro 11”/12.9” (2018-2022), iPad Air 4/5 and iPad Mini 6. Other iPad models use a different Pencil — check the Apple support article or your Bluetooth settings.

Every three to six months under normal use, sooner with heavy drawing. Swap immediately if the tip is visibly flat or damaged, otherwise it can scratch the display.

Apple Pencil 2. Gen uses magnetic side-charging on the iPad. We recommend keeping the pencil on the iPad — that way it stays charged and paired.

Quality third-party tips work fine and offer more choice in firmness and paper feel. Check that the tip is labelled for the right Pencil generation — Pencil 1, 2, USB-C and Pro use identical tip threading.

Charge for at least 30 seconds, open Bluetooth settings, forget the pencil and pair again. If that fails, restart the iPad and check that iPadOS is up to date.
