Key spec shifts:

• Connector — Lightning on most iPads through 2018, USB-C from iPad Pro 2018 (all Pro and Air from Air 4 + Mini 6 + newest Basic iPads). Thunderbolt 4 on M1/M2/M4 iPad Pro.
• OLED — first on iPad Pro M4 (2024), tandem OLED for extreme brightness.
• Home button — last iPad with Touch-ID home button: Basic iPad 9th gen (2021).
• Apple Intelligence — runs from M1 / A17 Pro (iPad Mini 7 + Air M2/M3 + Pro M4).
• 5G — on Cellular models from iPad Pro 2021, Air 5 and Mini 6.

Three axes: Pencil, keyboard and connector.

• Pencil Pro (squeeze, barrel-roll, Find My) — iPad Pro M4, Air M2, Mini 7. Pencil 2 NO longer supported.
• Pencil 2 (MagSafe magnet strip) — iPad Pro 2018-2022, Air 4-5, Mini 6.
• Pencil USB-C (no pressure, no hover) — every USB-C iPad (Pro, Air, Mini from 6, Basic from 10th gen).
• Pencil 1st gen (Lightning plug) — iPad Pro 2015-2017, Air 3, Mini 5, Basic iPad 6th-9th gen.

• Original Magic Keyboard (2020) — iPad Pro 11"/12.9" 2018-2022 + Air 4-7.
• Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro M4 (2024) — aluminium palm rest, function row, only iPad Pro M4.
• iPad Mini and Basic — no official Magic Keyboard, third-party Bluetooth only.

For students we recommend Smart Folio + paper-feel film — quiet writing haptic with Pencil. Artists and designers choose Pro with Pencil Pro + Magic Keyboard. Pilots and travellers reach for Mini with sleeve and Pencil pocket. Families go for Basic iPad with hardcase and kid-friendly grip. Business users combine Pro 13" with Magic Keyboard in laptop mode. Outdoor sport users go for bumper cases with drop protection up to 2 m. Sustainable options: recycled felt, recycled TPU and FSC cardboard sleeves are available. Crossbody lanyards for the Mini are available — hands-free in the cockpit or at a festival.

A full display repair on the iPad typically runs CHF 200–500 depending on model and display type (LCD on older Basic/Mini/Air, ProMotion OLED on Pro M4). 30–50% cheaper than a refurbished replacement device.
