For illustrators and designers we recommend hardcase with Pencil slot plus paper-feel film — the combo gives you the Procreate workflow without MagSafe-sound rattles. Architects and lawyers choose premium leather folio plus Magic Keyboard — representative at the client table. Video editors need Smart Folio plus an external Thunderbolt display and Magic Keyboard. Art/design students use hardcase with Pencil slot. Travelling pros reach for sleeve plus Magic Keyboard. Sustainable options: cases from recycled felt, recycled aluminium tops and bio-based TPU bottoms are available.

Pencil compatibility is the most important choice on the Pro:

• Pro 9.7" + Pro 10.5" — Apple Pencil 1st gen (Lightning pairing).
• Pro 11" 2018-2022 + Pro 12.9" 2018-2022 — Apple Pencil 2nd gen (side MagSafe magnet) + Apple Pencil USB-C.
• Pro 11" M4 + Pro 13" M4 (2024) + Pro M5 (2025) — Apple Pencil Pro (squeeze, barrel-roll, haptic, Find My) + Apple Pencil USB-C. Pencil 2 NO longer supported.

All iPad Pro 11" and 12.9" from 2018 support Magic Keyboard. Pro 9.7" and Pro 10.5" use the old Smart Keyboard Folio.

• Pro 11" 2018-2022 + Pro 12.9" 2018-2022 — original Magic Keyboard 2020
• Pro 11" M4 + Pro 13" M4 (2024) — NEW Magic Keyboard with aluminium palm rest, function row and larger trackpad. The old Magic Keyboard is NO longer compatible with the M4 (different format).

Pro 9.7" + 10.5" charge via Lightning, Pro 2018+ via USB-C, Pro M1/M2/M4/M5 via Thunderbolt 4. Display highlights: mini-LED on Pro 12.9" M1/M2 (Liquid Retina XDR), tandem OLED on Pro M4/M5 (Ultra Retina XDR). The MagSafe magnet on the back exists only on iPad Pro 11"/13" M4 (for the new Magic Keyboard and external MagSafe stand — no iPhone-MagSafe wireless charging). Outdoor cases with drop protection up to 2 m, premium up to 5 m. A display repair on the iPad Pro typically runs CHF 200–400 (12.9"/13" tends to be higher), a case from CHF 9 amortises on the first drop — 30–50% cheaper than a refurbished replacement device.

Pro users mostly pick paper-feel film for Procreate writing haptic (matte, slightly textured). Beside that clear tempered-standard films for max image clarity and anti-glare films for outdoor use in sunlight. Hydrogel films for curved glass edges. Avoid dark privacy films on the tandem OLED of the Pro M4 — they cost you XDR brilliance.
