Which MacBook do I have?
Identify the model, size and year of your MacBook – key for the right case, sleeve and screen protector.
Fastest: “About This Mac”
- Click the Apple menu () top left › About This Mac.
- You'll see the model and year (e.g. “MacBook Air, M2, 2022”) plus the chip.
- Under More Info you'll also find the serial number.
Identify by model number
The model number (format A2xxx, e.g. A2338) is printed in small type on the bottom of the case. It maps model, size and year uniquely – ideal when the MacBook won't start.
Identify by design & features
For cases and films, the line, screen size and year matter. Here's how to narrow them down:
Air or Pro
Air = thin and light, fanless. Pro = more powerful, with fan and more ports. The label sits below the display or on the bottom.
Screen size
13, 14, 15 or 16 inches – when unsure, measure the screen diagonal (13" ≈ 33 cm, 16" ≈ 41 cm). The inch size is the key measure: cases, laptop bags and backpacks are sized by it.
Chip & year
Apple Silicon (M1–M4) = 2020 or later, Intel = older. Both appear in “About This Mac” – same inch size doesn't mean same dimensions.
Ports
Only USB-C/Thunderbolt = 2016–2021. MagSafe 3 (magnetic charging port) = newer models from 2021/2022, on the Pro also with HDMI and SD slot.
Tip: Above all, remember the inch size – laptop bags, backpacks and sleeves are tiered by inches (e.g. “up to 14"”). For hard cases, also check line + year; the A-number keeps you on the safe side.
