USB-C devices you want to charge at a USB-A port: Galaxy S8 to S25, iPhone 15+, iPad Pro/Air/Mini from the 2018 generation, Pixel, Xiaomi 11+, Huawei P40+, Nintendo Switch, USB-C power banks, many Bluetooth headphones (AirPods Pro 2 USB-C, AirPods 4, Sony, recent Bose). If your adapter has a USB-C port, prefer USB-C to USB-C — that's the only variant with USB-PD fast charging.
Plugging a USB-C phone to USB-A adapter charges at a max of 5 V / 2.4 A = 12 W, up to 18 W with Quick Charge. USB-PD fast charging (20+ W) only happens over USB-C-to-USB-C. Data rate depends on the cable: cheap models USB 2.0 (480 Mbps), better USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps), premium USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps). Check the data rate before buying if you plan phone-to-PC backups or external SSDs.
The USB-C plug is reversible — fits both ways, no more wrong-way fumbling. Mechanically much more robust than Micro-USB. Nylon-braided cables with aluminium connector housings and strain relief last twice as long as plain PVC. Bend tests run to 10,000–30,000 cycles. For car and travel we recommend braided models.
0.5 m for power bank in backpack and phone mount in car, 1 m standard for bag and travel, 2 m for sofa, bed and desk, 3 m for longer reach. Longer cables have slightly higher resistance — at 12–18 W via USB-A practically negligible.

Yes, the iPhone 15 has USB-C. But: no fast charging over USB-A — max 12 W. Fast charging (20 W to 50 % in 30 minutes) needs USB-C to USB-C and a USB-PD adapter.
Yes, if the cable is rated as a data cable. USB 3.2 Gen 1 with 5 Gbps data transfer is standard for good models. Cheap cables can be limited to USB 2.0 (480 Mbps).
USB-A is the big rectangular classic (1996, on PCs, cars, USB hubs). USB-C is the small, reversible new plug — fits both ways, higher power (up to 240 W), higher data rate (up to 40 Gbps with Thunderbolt 4). USB-C has been standard for modern devices since around 2017.
