USB-C is only the connector type — the actual spec varies: USB 2.0 (480 Mbps, charging-only cable) to USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps, 100 W PD, 2x4K or 1x8K display, daisy-chain a TB4 hub). For SSD backups, external 4K monitors and docks you need at least 10 Gbps, ideally 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4. Check the spec when buying — a cheap 60 W charging cable will not transfer data at 10 Gbps.
Top USB-C cables have nylon braid, gold-plated contacts, aluminium connector housings and are USB-IF certified — compatible and safe. For 100 W or 240 W an integrated E-marker IC inside the plug is mandatory, signalling power and spec to the hardware. Strain relief and 30,000-cycle bend tests are premium standard. We recommend braided models for heavy users and travellers.
