Lightning to USB-A cables at RPD for iPhone 5 to iPhone 14, older iPads (pre USB-C models) and AirPods Pro 1 — the classic standard that dominated the Apple world between 2012 and 2023. We strongly recommend MFi-certified models (Made for iPhone): they include an Apple authentication chip, are not blocked by iOS updates and won't show the „accessory not supported“ warning. USB-A delivers at most 5 V / 2.4 A = 12 W — fast charging via USB-PD 20 W requires USB-C-to-Lightning (see separate category). For iPhone 5 to iPhone 14: fits everywhere, the Lightning plug has been unchanged since 2012. For iPad Pro 9.7" to 12.9" (2018 and older), iPad Mini 2–5, iPad Air 1–3, iPad 5th–9th gen, AirPods Pro 1 (Lightning case): identical. Apple switched to USB-C with the iPhone 15 (September 2023) — Lightning cables do not fit there. USB-A is the right choice for older Macs and car USB-A sockets, for modern USB-C adapters see „Lightning to USB-C".
Over USB-A the iPhone charges at a maximum of 12 W (5 V / 2.4 A) — no USB-PD fast charging possible. Fast charging (20 W to 50 % in 30 minutes) requires a Lightning-to-USB-C cable and a USB-PD adapter. MFi (Made for iPhone) is Apple's licensing programme: certified cables include a chip that talks to iOS. Non-certified cables often work for months but may show „accessory not supported" after an iOS update — we only stock MFi models or clearly marked non-MFi budget cables.
Original Apple Lightning has a white PVC sleeve — solid but prone to kinking at the connector. Third-party MFi cables are often wrapped in nylon braid, last twice as long and come in many colours. Bend tests run from 10,000 to 30,000 cycles at the connector, which is reinforced per Apple's spec. We recommend braided models for heavy users.
