USB-C describes only the plug, not the speed. USB 3.2 Gen 2 delivers 10 Gbps, USB4 up to 40 Gbps. Thunderbolt 4 is Intel's flavour of USB4 with guaranteed 40 Gbps, display daisy-chain (multiple screens on one cable) and PCIe tunnelling. For MacBook and pro workflows: choose Thunderbolt 4.
HDMI 2.1 is standard for Apple TV, PS5, Xbox Series X and new TVs — handles 8K60Hz or 4K120Hz for gaming. DisplayPort 2.1 is the PC choice, up to 8K60Hz with HDR or 4K240Hz for esports. For MacBook over Thunderbolt display: a USB-C cable is enough or use a USB-C-to-HDMI/DP adapter.
Cat 5e = 1 Gbit (home network, cheap). Cat 6 = 1 Gbit on 100 m / 10 Gbit on 55 m. Cat 6a = 10 Gbit on 100 m (future-proof). Cat 7 is shielded, ideal for industrial and server rooms. For home NAS and 10-Gbit switches: Cat 6a recommended — for 1-Gbit internet Cat 5e is enough.
For desk setups: 1–2 m USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 (longer requires active cables from CHF 60+). HDMI/DP: up to 3 m passive without losses. Ethernet: up to 100 m Cat 6/7. Look for USB-IF, HDMI Forum or VESA certification — otherwise no guarantee of full bandwidth.
